Raie Chaelia by Melissa Douthit – Book Review

Posted: October 22, 2011 in book review

Raie Chaelia is a fantasy story along the line of the Hobbit with less magic and more science. Melissa Douthit is a magician as she melds science and magic with a touch of everyday technology and culture.  It is an easy to read adventure for young adults and older children told in an easy style. Self discovery, romance, responsibility, and friendship show the way to leadership for Chalice. The first of a series, Raie Chaelia is a book I enjoyed.

Chalice’s family home has been destroyed by the evil king’s mysterious army as she is snuck out of town by her uncle, the only father she remembers. In her quest to find out why all this is happening and who she really is she finds an old friend who becomes her protector and forbidden soulmate. As she discovers her place in the world she finds it is not what she wants. Will she take on a heavy responsibility or flee to the life she wants?  She comes closer to the meaning of her disturbing, but recurring, dream as she finds her friends and family who escaped the king’s army. Not all who appear to be friend are, and not all who appear to be enemy are. Who is who?

The Raie' ChaeliaThe Raie’ Chaelia by Melissa Douthit

I enjoyed this book. I received it free to review and found it a good but simple alternative to the classic fantasy. Douthit has created a new world for her story but there are definite ties to the one we live in so it is relatable for a young reader who finds the classic fantasies like Tolkien difficult to keep up with.
